Forming My World View through Aquaculture in 1977 by Robert Glenn Ketchum

In 1977, I was commissioned by Elisabeth Mann Borgese to help do research, interviews, and take photographs for a book she was writing about worldwide aquaculture. It would be published by Harry N. Abrams, one of the world’s premier publishing houses, famous for their beautiful books. It would also involve around-the-world travel to 8 countries, and some of the most remarkable places I would ever visit. SEAFARM: The Story of Aquaculture was a very successful publication featuring over 100 of my images, and an exhibit I assembled with support from Nikon, became a Smithsonian traveling exhibition for 6-yrs., viewed by over 6-million people.

Russia #4:

Having arrived, and survived, Moscow airport in the pre-dawn hours of the day, Elisabeth and I are now in a car with various friends and officials headed to our hotel. I am surreptitiously taking pictures from the car as we drive along because I have been advised to be “discreet.” It is early spring of 1977 and Moscow still has snow. It is the Cold War Soviet Union, and it is cold. As we draw closer to the city, housing density increases and seems familiarly “European” to me, EXCEPT for the dramatic wall murals that appear with some regularity. Although I cannot read them, it is clear that most promote the Russian worker, and the work ethic. I think “Orwell”. Good graphics though, and I am a big fan of red as a dramatic color. Things begin to change, however, while our ride continues ever deeper into the heart of Moscow, particularly the scale of the architecture.

In 1988, I was contacted by Luther Propst, Director of the Rincon Institute of Tucson, AZ, who asked me if I could help them devise a campaign to protect a part of Saguaro National Monument from a massive real estate development that would disrupt substantial habitat. I did so, and we not only succeeded in mitigating the development, we added 30,000 acres to the monument, and got it upgraded to National Park status. While doing this work, I fell in love with the Sonoran Desert, returning to it repeatedly, and visiting the many varied parts of it in Arizona, Mexico, and Baja, CA. This is the tale of those visits.

One of the greatest camping and hiking circuits to drive in the entire country, starts from my home in Los Angeles, passes through Nevada, into Utah, and on to Arizona, before heading back to LA. Along the way you can visit 3 state parks, 6 national parks, 1 national monument, and 1 national recreation area. If you wanted to put in some extra miles, you could add another national park, 2 more national monuments, and 2 more national recreation areas. I will call out the latter as we pass them, but my images will introduce you to all of the former. Come take a drive with me!

After a “wild” night of food, and a tour of the Patpong district of Bangkok, Elisabeth and I receive word that our aquaculture research plans have been approved, so we rise early the next morning to leave our hotel, and head towards the Chao Phraya River, where we will board a private boat, with guides and researchers to advise us, which the government has arranged on our behalf. Arriving at the riverfront, our hosts connect us to our guides, who seem eager to work with us, and they also speak excellent English. The riversides are choked with houses and boats of every description, and there is a flurry of activity everywhere. As this is all new to me, the first thing I notice is an abundance of large, ceramic, decorated pots, literally everywhere I look. Some are being sold, some are being used, but every boat I can see has many of them aboard. When I query our new associates about them, I am told they serve many purposes, from food and water storage, to the collection of “night soil.” Boy, I guess you do not want to get your pots confused.

In 2023, the Akron Art Museum launches a pair of '80s inspired exhibitions, "Totally Rad: Bold Color in the 1980s” and “Totally Radical: Art and Politics in the 1980s.” Through works drawn from the museum’s permanent collection, each show highlights a particular aspect of the decade. “Totally Rad" offers a dazzling deep dive into colorful vibrancy. The exhibition focuses on artists who found inventiveness, freedom, and fun by testing out every extreme possibility that color has to offer. “Totally Radical” spans the decade’s political flashpoints. I had some of my work from the Cuyahoga valley included in “Totally Radical."

Since 1998, I have been working to protect southeast Alaska, and the fishery of Bristol Bay. The fishery is an annually renewable, BILLION-dollar-a-year industry that employs thousands and thousands of workers in multiple states. 2021 provided the largest commercial salmon catch in history (64-million+). There is no intelligent reason to allow the proposed development of the Pebble mine to go forward and imperil these resources. The United Tribes of Bristol Bay, the United Fishermen of Alaska, Trout Unlimited, Trustees For Alaska, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, all oppose the development. Even Alaskan Senator, Lisa Murkowski, has stated her opposition. The momentum is building. Now is the time to SAY NO TO THE PEBBLE MINE permanently!

THE TONGASS: Stop the Cut, There are Salmon in the Trees

In 1985, I began a 2-year commission to explore the Tongass rainforest, the largest forest in the United States Forest Service (USFS) system AND the largest temperate rainforest in the world. It was a unique, old-growth environment under siege from industrial logging. The resulting investigative book I published helped to pass the Tongass Timber Reform Bill, protect 1,000,000 acres of old-growth, and create 11 new wilderness areas. This is the story of how that was achieved.

As I near the end of this Tongass blog, I am going to repost a number of images that marked the best of my various trip experience over the four years I spent working there. I was commissioned to work in the rainforest by Barney Mchenry who previously provided me with my Hudson River commission. Barney thought the best way to be introduced to the Tongass was aboard Boat Company boat which was owned by Michael McIntosh, so he introduced us. Michael was happy to have me join the other members of the boat, and one of the first places we visited was the very small community of Warm Springs. Warm Springs overlooked a large, and raging, waterfall, which Michael wanted to fish. When he got near the waterfall, the scale of my coming Alaskan adventure became clear.

Denali: Crown Jewel of our National Parks #57

The meals at Camp Denali are excellent, especially the dinners. The meats and fish come from outside the area, flown in once a week. Many of the vegetables, however, are grown in a garden behind the kitchen. Because there so many hours of daylight in the summer in Alaska, it extends the growing time and creates some oversized crops. Check out these huge heads of lettuce.
