LittleBearProd: Q) Why did you publish this book?
Al Satterwhite: A) Hunter & I became friends back in the '70's long before he became a media star. I got to know Hunter when he was freely Hunter, before the media made a caricature of him. We shared many great adventures. Our time together in Cozumel was one of those adventures; besides photographing Hunter for the interview, afterwards we would roam the island together and I would capture Hunter being Hunter. I thought that the renewed interest in Hunter and the recent anniversary of the Playboy interviews would make a great combination for fans.
Al Satterwhite: A) The story in the book covers our adventures in Florida and the week of craziness in Cozumel when we did the interview. I had the original interviewer, Craig Vetter, write a forward for the book; and my good friend, William McKeen, write a Postword (he wrote the best bio of Hunter, called Outlaw Journalist). I wrote about our adventures and time together, and Playboy allowed me to publish the original interview in full. It's a great adventure, and a wonderful story.
The book includes a foreward by Craig Vetter, a 10,000 word essay by the photographer, and an afterward by Hunter S. Thompson biographer William McKeen, plus additional supplementary materials.
